The Prayer Jesus Gave to Us
The Lord’s Prayer is one of the most recognised and powerful prayers in the Christian faith.
It is not simply a collection of words to repeat. It is a complete guide to worship, trust, forgiveness, provision, protection and living each day in the presence of God.
Jesus taught this prayer to His disciples when they asked Him how they should pray. Every line directs our attention towards God and teaches us how to bring our lives, needs, relationships, fears and hopes before Him.
Take your time as you read. Pause over each line and allow God to speak into your heart and present circumstances.
Matthew 6:9–13
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
A line-by-line journey
Understanding the Hidden Meaning
Each line of the Lord’s Prayer reveals something important about God, our relationship with Him and the way we are called to live.
We Belong to God
Jesus teaches us to approach God as a loving Father. We are not speaking to a distant stranger. We are welcomed into a close relationship with the One who created us, knows us and cares for us.
Honouring God
To hallow God’s name means to recognise His holiness, greatness and authority. Prayer begins by turning our attention away from ourselves and towards the wonder and majesty of God.
Welcoming God’s Rule
We ask for God’s love, justice, mercy, truth and peace to shape our hearts, our homes, our communities and our world.
We invite Him to rule over every area of our lives.
Trusting God’s Direction
These words are an act of surrender. We bring God our hopes, plans and needs while trusting that His wisdom is greater than our own.
We ask Him to guide our decisions and help us live in a way that honours Him.
Depending on God
Daily bread represents everything we genuinely need: food, shelter, strength, guidance, friendship, peace and spiritual nourishment.
God invites us to bring our everyday needs before Him and trust Him one day at a time.
Receiving Mercy
Prayer includes honest confession. We acknowledge the times we have failed, spoken wrongly, acted selfishly or moved away from God.
Through Jesus Christ, we can receive mercy, restoration and a new beginning.
Releasing Other People
Forgiveness does not pretend that hurt never happened or that harmful behaviour was acceptable.
It means releasing revenge into God’s hands and asking Him to heal our hearts, guide our boundaries and help us move forwards in freedom.
Asking for Guidance
We recognise our weakness and ask God to guide our thoughts, choices and actions.
We pray for wisdom to recognise temptation and strength to choose what is right, healthy and faithful.
Seeking God’s Protection
We ask God to guard us spiritually, emotionally and physically.
We place our fears, dangers and unseen battles into His hands and trust in His saving power.
Ending in Worship
The prayer ends by returning all authority, power and glory to God.
Our problems may feel overwhelming, but God remains greater. His kingdom is eternal and His faithfulness never ends.
